DOCTOR HELPS AT NEW LEVEL
 |
| Steve and his wife Sandy |
Dr. Steven Bigg has always had a heart
for caring and helping people in need. This is even
more evident now that he has accepted a role on the
Board of Directors. Steven first learned of The Haven
of Grace through St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and through
his friends, Ann and Hal Burroughs, Vice-President of
the Board of Directors.
While attending a Wine and Roses event
10 years ago, Steve thought “What else can I do? Attending
events was a great way to help The Haven serve young
pregnant women, but there is still more I can do.”
Seven years ago, Steve devised a way
to contribute to The Haven on a steady, unique basis.
At that time he traveled to Alton, IL two or three times
a month to help a fellow urologists perform certain
difficult operations that he was unable to perform alone.
“Rather than accepting a paycheck from the hospital
for my services, I arranged for them to donate my surgeon’s
fees to The Haven of Grace, instead.”
When this arrangement ended, Steve
wanted to continue helping The Haven of Grace. Steve
said, “simply writing a check didn't feel like it was
enough. This spring when The Haven approached me with
the opportunity to serve on the board, I gladly accepted.
It gives me an opportunity to help at a new level.”
What Steve likes most about The Haven
is its commitment to helping women over a long period
of time. “The women who come don't just stay for three
months and leave. The Haven helps provide these young
women with the skills and knowledge they need to care
for their children and themselves.” Steve likes how
The Haven works to educate these women; and he also
likes how The Haven also follows them for ten years.
In this way it serves as a support network to these
women and creates stability.
With Steve’s dedication to improving
lives in the medical field and on the social field,
the Board of Directors is proud to welcome Steve and
his passion to the board. What would he like to accomplish
as a board member? “ I would like to help the program
continue to grow and expand the types of services that
they provide. I will be serving on the Program Committee
that will examine new ways to do this. I look forward
to contributing to The Haven’s efforts to make a difference
in our community.”
