EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S CORNER

| Diane Berry, Executive Director |
It is exciting to report that we at
The Haven of Grace receive news almost daily from former
resi-dents who have successfully transi-tioned from
poor, destitute women into productive citizens with
fruit-ful, meaningful lives. Our ten-year Aftercare
Program provides the formal structure that ensures we
continue these relationships once families move on.
While we offer basic necessities in
the residential program— food, shelter, and clothing—I
never cease to be amazed at how the spirit of the nurturing
environment we offer takes precedence over basic human
needs. By providing a nurturing, home-like atmosphere
that serves women and babies and creates families, The
Haven in a big way is improving the economy. Here’s
why: In recent studies of economic disparity, it is
evident that family background—a child’s home environment—is
a top indicator of successful living.
The Haven of Grace provides the stable,
loving structure that formerly homeless women were not
receiving sufficiently. Children and teens (as well
as adults) learn from people they love. I recently received
an email from Crystal. Her words echo this truth: The
Haven is seeing an increasing number of its former residents
breaking the cycle of poverty and taking wedding vows.
I am sharing Crystal’s thoughts in this publication
as a testament to the important work that is being done
daily.
Crystal’s note reminds me of The Haven’s
dedication to the long-term solutions offered for the
problem of homelessness and poverty. Your support helps
us continue to change lives.
- 71% of Aftercare program participants are employed
full- or part-time; saving the State $1.7M in welfare
benefits;
- 16% of participants are attending a post-secondary
educational institution; 38% received a Haven scholarship;
- 117 $500 scholarships have been provided since 2001;
- 16 families have purchased their own homes through
The Haven’s Homebuyer’s Club.
The Haven of Grace is more than a place—it’s
a process. This process of creating healthy families
takes sustained financial support. Please continue to
invest in the lives of others.
