A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE

Volunteer babysitting at The Haven
of Grace is a valuable service that provides a night
out for the facility’s ten resident mothers. This is
a rare occasion for these women to relax and enjoy a
break from the demands of caring for a new baby.
These mothers struggle on a daily basis
to overcome issues of poverty and homelessness. The
Haven of Grace provides them with the opportunity to
turn their lives around, because they must commit to
a routine of strict discipline and rigorous program
requirements. On this special evening, the residents
get to step out and experience a taste of the art and
culture that some St. Louisans take for granted in their
hometown. Wives and girlfriends of players for the St.
Louis Hockey Blues volunteered for two hours Friday,
March 17, so the women of The Haven could enjoy a night
at the theatre.
Through the efforts of The Haven’s
Board member Sally Lemkemeier, the Repertory Theatre
donated the tickets. Marlene (Mickey) Brown, a former
Board member, generously funded professional hairstyling
services. The women attended opening night of “Witness
for the Prosecution” at the Repertory Theatre on the
campus of Webster University.
This year Blues wives and girlfriends
have helped raise almost $18,000 for various non-profit
organizations. Each year in December they help collect
toys and donations for Toys for Tots, and decorate holiday
trees to raise money for the Delta gamma Center for
Visually Impaired Children. Most recently, wives and
girlfriends held a Luck of the Puck fundraiser, where
they sold a limited number of wrapped, autographed pucks
at the March 11 game to raise money for women’s shelters.
During their March 17 visit they awarded The Haven of
Grace a check for $2,500, half the total proceeds from
the event.
